I've worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs and have seen first hand what it takes to go from overthinking, perfectionism, procrastination, and stuck-ness into imperfect action, confidence, clarity, and yes, profitability.

You're not alone if you've been making things harder than they need to be. But you also don't need to stay there.

THROUGH PREP WORK, YOU’LL MAKE THE 5 MENTAL SHIFTS REQUIRED TO BECOME A PRODUCTIVE (READ: NO MORE OVERTHINKING) AND PROFITABLE ENTREPRENEUR.

how it works

How do you get things done without hustling? And how do you get yourself to work when it's hard?

Your head is wired one of two ways, and once you understand YOUR wiring, you'll be master of your own motivation. Action-taking for the win!

There's a lot of talk "out there" (every feed you scroll, every personal development book you read, etc.) about the importance of self-care. For the record, I agree with the *sentiment* of self-care, but inside the Inspiration Shift of Prep Work, I teach my students about the OPPOSITE of self-care too.

The quick 2:30 minute clip above is straight from Prep Work, where I describe this a little bit more.

Do-ers, who are wired to take action and create results FIRST for themselves, will often applaud themselves for their ability to use willpower to get things done. To push through difficulties and achieve whatever they want. Do-ers use self-discipline to run away from sub-standard results, mediocrity, being perceived as lazy, or not living up to their (usually very high) expectations.

Now, while I love me some resilient people, willpower is a finite resource, and doing *anything* for too long from a place of "I've gotta, or else" will ultimately not end well.

The opposite side of the same coin is my Be-ers, who are wired to shift their identity first and prioritize their internal state above all else. Consequently, if they feel "off," they'll do all the things that, well, pretty much any self-care meme tells you to do (take a break, do some yoga, call a friend, have a guilt-free Netflix binge, etc.). Be-ers use self-indulgence to run away from undesirable feelings.

I certainly advocate for breaks and extended bubble baths and have pretty much been an unpaid sponsor of Haagen Dazs, except, those behaviors don't in and of themselves create long-term growth or change.

The problem with BOTH self-discipline and self-indulgence is that they're driven by what you *don't* want (either results or feelings).

Depending on how you're wired,
the opposite of self-care for YOU will either be
self-discipline or self-indulgence.

THE INSPIRATION SHIFT

So instead, I advocate for your self-care in the most literal sense of the word. Self-care says, "Here is what I want and who I want to be and based on that, {this type of action} would be good for me."

Self-care is focused on your long-term, holistic well-being; whereas self-discipline/self-indulgence allow you to escape your current reality by either creating a different result or feeling for yourself via instant gratification (e.g. hard work or Haagen Dazs).

This means that ANY ACTION CAN BE TAKEN FROM A PLACE OF SELF-CARE OR SELF-INDULGENCE/SELF-DISCIPLINE and it's your job to discern the difference for yourself to create sustainable growth (the rest of the Inspiration Shift helps you learn how to do this).

The Inspiration Shift is all about recognizing and pivoting your motivation to do ANYTHING from a place of self-care.

For Do-ers, this means you likely DO get to listen to the stereotypical self-care advice. Your long-term well-being REQUIRES rest, pauses, recreation, silence, etc. But yes, you can "hustle" from a place of self-care too!

For Be-ers, this means your self-care probably looks like taking risks, doing uncomfortable new things, working your way towards making enough money to be well-taken-care-of, etc. But typical "self-care activities" may help you be able to take action!

Prep Work is designed to help you build MOMENTUM. To know how to get YOURSELF moving in the best way for YOU. To understand and know how to work WITH your head, RIGHT NOW, *exactly* as it is, while learning how to improve the areas you'd like to.

This is 2:30 minutes from 1 of 24+ videos inside Prep Work. Prep Work is comprehensiveAF... I know of no other program that helps you understand how to make your own head your business's biggest asset.

“…Things started really changing for me. My business from 2018 to 2019 almost tripled in revenue!”

I know we’re about to start another live round of Prep Work. I’m so excited for it! It’s different every time. The material doesn’t change necessarily, but the things that I take away from it because I’m evolving as a person each time I take the course is really special, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Everyone is happy to tell you how to make more money in your business. And, for the record, it can be fun to make lots of money! But inside the Seeking Shift of Prep Work, we talk a lot about what it is you're trying to get from your business that isn't financial... and how that's actually slowing down the progress you're making in terms of money!

Counting on your business to be THE way you create freedom,
flexibility, a way to contribute to your family, to serve or connect with others, because this is your life's purpose, etc. puts a ton of pressure on your business NEEDING to be successful.

This sub-3 minute clip is straight from one of the lessons inside Prep Work where I describe the six emotional needs we ALL have, and the problem with trying to get one or more of them met (solely) by your business...

What's it look like when someone does this?

- The purpose-driven entrepreneur who can't imagine NOT doing what they do now... and so, if this business doesn't make it, who will they be and what will they do then?!
- The mom/long-time caregiver/person looking for meaning, who really wants the business to prove they're "not just a {role they spend so much time in}"
- The laid-off or long-overlooked employee who absolutely, positively, refuses to let anyone else determine whether or not they have an income
- The multipassionate creative who just wants to make a living spending their day doing stuff they like
- The empty nester who is looking for a renewed sense of purpose and significance in their second act

See, the problem with relying on your business to meet one of your six emotional needs (certainty, uncertainty, love, significance, growth, or contribution) is that *your head will not allow you to do anything that risks the business failing*... because THEN WHAT?!

This is the very fear that drives people to scoop up other people's "proven systems" and "guaranteed blueprints"... to look for THE.WAY. that seems most promising in ensuring the success of the business. To avoid risks, failures, anything not-Mensa-level-strategic.

This is the fastest way to become reactive in your business. To stop trusting yourself to be your own best source of meeting your emotional needs.

Counting on your business to fulfill ALL of your needs puts a ton of pressure on your business NEEDING to be successful.

THE SEEKING SHIFT

This means that IT'S YOUR JOB TO MAKE SURE *YOU* ARE TAKING CARE OF YOUR EMOTIONAL NEEDS, rather than leaving your well-being up to the status of your business (and the "business gurus" you lean on to try to make it a success). That's what the rest of the Seeking Shift helps you do.

The Seeking Shift is all about trusting yourself to be resourceful to go get or create whatever you want/need next.

Strategically, this means you learn to use resources (courses, podcasts, books, tools, etc.) as TOOLS, rather than solutions (you can't buy *solutions,* btw... YOU are always the solution to any problem you face... contrary to what every FB ad will tell you ;) ).

Emotionally, this means that you learn who you can go to for what, how to fill your own buckets, how to not hang all your self-worth on the status of your business, etc. ("you are not what you do" is a big thing we practice in the Seeking Shift!)

There are a few key things Prep Work is really focused on helping you do:
- think like an entrepreneur (I spent a lot of time learning what to DO... I would have made a lot faster progress if I would have focused first on how to BE an entrepreneur)
- build momentum RIGHT NOW, exactly as you are (you don't have to have all your shit sorted before you can have the business you want, promise!)
- trust yourself to be the.best.authority on YOU, what works for you, and how you can use that to build your business

Prep Work is especially for people who already know (at least roughly) what their business is, and they have the nagging sense that THEY are the thing slowing it down.

There's no place where Prep Work doesn't become useful. Students who bought two years ago still come to the live rounds and get something new from it every time.

*I* still think about my own business growth in terms of these shifts. I've sent 7-figure entrepreneurs to different modules because they needed to make one of the shifts to move forward.

An investment in WHO YOU ARE has a *lifetime* ROI!

I love me some left-brained strategy (you too?!)! But I had to learn to put that *second* in order to build my business. In the Engagement Shift, we ditch the overthinking and perfectionism of blueprints and strategies and focus on building momentum in your business in the way that works FOR YOU.

The Engagement Shift

MINI LESSON #3

wHY THE ENGAGEMENT SHIFT MATTERS

join prep work

keep reading this lesson

I love me some left-brained strategy (you too?!)! There's something about a flow chart or spreadsheet or just logically thinking through how something can work that makes my head so happy.

And yet, I had to learn to put that *second* in order to build my business. In the Engagement Shift of Prep Work, we focus on building momentum in your business in the way that works FOR YOU.

Every blueprint, strategy, short cut, or 5-steps-to-{insert thing here} that you've ever bought was based on how someone else was able to build momentum for THEMSELVES... which may or may not be how YOU are wired to create results.

The clip above is straight from the Engagement Shift and describes more about the truth (and limitations) of buying someone else's blueprint.

Here's the deal... I STILL love me some blueprints. I love seeing how other people's brains work. Sometimes people hear me talk and they ask things like "does this mean I shouldn't hire a business coach? do you not buy ANY courses anymore?"

No and no. But what I don't do is make those investments and then insist that I follow them explicitly or implement them entirely (or immediately).

Blueprints are useful for giving you options;
YOU have to implement them in the way that works FOR YOU!

How will you know what's the next right step for you? It'll be the step you can TAKE. The action you have little resistance to. The thing that sounds fun or that you're curious about. It will have nothing to do with creating a specific result, and everything to do with you loving the PROCESS of creating results.

Every blueprint you've ever bought was based on how someone else was able to build momentum, which may or may not work for YOU.

THE ENGAGEMENT SHIFT

People who don't fear "failure" or don't get paralyzed by perfectionism or procrastination are able to move forward because their reward is the action. They get their energy to keep going, to stay resilient, to keep trying at something until it works FROM THE WORK ITSELF... because they like it (not because they guilted or shoulded themselves into submission via some course's accountability group).

The Engagement Shift is all about being willing to take imperfect action and enjoy the process. To not NEED (especially external) clarity in order to move forward.

People who nail this skill bounce back quickly from setbacks, are able to pivot and tweak with ease, and develop a growth mindset about growing their business.

Prep Work has helped people do some pretty cool things. Jill talked about how she nearly tripled her income from 2018 to 2019, for instance, by letting go of what other people thought about her and her business. That's huge!

But honestly, Prep Work isn't just going to change your business. It's impossible to change your thinking in just one area and not have it bleed over to others. Which is probably why Celia said, "I’m taking much, much better care of myself now, and better care of my family, and better care of my business since I started Prep Work."

Brain training, developing more of a growth mindset, affects your entire life. We talk about this through the lens of business in Prep Work, but YOU get to apply it to who you are as a person (probably why Sam said, "It's been the single best thing I've done for my brain... maybe ever!"

The Honesty Shift

MINI LESSON #4

WHY THE HONESTY SHIFT MATTERS

join prep work

keep reading this lesson

You know what sells? Anything that involves health, wealth, or relationships. Those are the things that a good marketer can poke their fingers at and make you feel all the pain points. Those are the areas where we're most likely to think we need to make an improvement (and consequently, why we're willing to invest in them).

And yet, in the Honesty Shift of Prep Work, we talk a lot about how, yes yes yes, you OBVIOUSLY want money in your business, but that may not *actually* be the result you're really optimizing right now.

As important as money is to make a business viable (and as fun as it can be to have plenty of it), if you're basing your strategy on financial goals but subconsciously care more about {another important thing}, there's going to be lots of tension in your decision making (i.e. STUCKNESS).

The 2-ish minute clip above is straight from the Honesty Shift and explains why you've gotta know what you're *actually* shooting for in your business.

Nothing changes in isolation. Which means that when you do/make/change/try something new in an attempt to create a certain result, there WILL be side effects... little ripples that you may or may not have been able to see coming.

Which isn't bad (necessarily, at least)! But if you've instituted change all higgledy-piggledy (<-- a grossly underused expression), you'll have a hard time knowing if what you did just "worked."

Which could make you scrap things that were actually quite successful, OR actually attribute success to something that didn't really have anything to do with what just happened.

You have to know what you're trying to get out of whatever it is you do or you'll never be able to *consciously* create success for yourself (and I don't take you for the type who would like to rely on dumb luck)!

Have you any idea how rare it is for me to speak in absolutes like "have to" and "never"? And yet, these I stand by.

Being able and willing to determine
1) where you are right now,
2) where it is you're trying to go, and
3) what you're going to try to get there
is a SKILL (that the Honesty Shift teaches you!).

Yes, you OBVIOUSLY want money in your business, but that may not *actually* be the result you're really optimizing right now.

THE HONESTY SHIFT

All that? MEGA momentum-building, and again, not anything that anyone else can answer for you... you can, however, learn the signs, practice the tools, and be actively coached into answering that question for yourself (*cough*joinPrepWork*cough*).

The Honesty Shift is all about dropping your expectations of where you "should" be and acknowledging where you ARE so you can CHOOSE the very.next.step forward.

This is probably the module that sets Prep Workers FREE from their shoulds more than any other.

Can I be honest? I made Prep Work because I wish it had existed when I was beating my head against the entrepreneurial wall.

It's not that I wasn't skilled or capable. It's that my head kept me stuck... which was ridiculously frustrating, embarrassing, annoying, {insert lots of other self-flagellating feelings here}.

Paying my mindset coach $10k (while I was making $0) was the best decision I ever made, because it turns out that I didn't HAVE to keep feeling the way I did, day-in-and-day-out.

I was just a few key shifts away from starting to build momentum for myself. And there's a 0% chance I would have made those shifts as quickly as I did without her.

Prep Work is your permission slip to feel better *right now*... AS you build your business (in fact, it's the feeling better that ALLOWS you to build your business!).

You don't have to do this alone (it's not just me you gain inside Prep Work... it's a community of non-judgmental, brilliant people who you can lean on and learn from!).

If you could shift just ONE thing in your head and change how you feeling tomorrow, would that be worth it? If you said yes, please join us!

You already know if Prep Work is right for you.

When I hired my coach, I told her that the scariest part of saying yes to her was that I was saying yes TO ME. I'm so glad I did. You will be too.

I joined Prep Work two years ago, and it’s been one of the best training courses and coaching I’ve ever gotten (and I’ve done a looooot of courses and training). Jessica is able to get right to the heart of the issues you’re dealing with (whether personal or professional), and her program allows you to start to discover the underlying causes of why you don’t think you have enough money/time/success/all the things.

She is a no-fluff teacher which I appreciate, she values your time and wants you to get the most clarity as directly as possible. Every time I go through Prep Work I get more insights, and more clarity on why I make the decisions I do, and how to make better decisions if I want to go a different direction. Even now, I still purchase courses and training, but I’m much more specific about why I’m purchasing them so I’m not wasting my time or money.

If you’re a high achiever like me but feel like you’ve been smashing against a wall unable to get the results you want (or not being happy with the results you do get), Prep Work will help. I highly recommend Jessica and the course, it’s awesome for teasing apart your automatic thinking habits that lead to all the results in your life.

“It’s been one of the best training courses and coaching I’ve ever gotten!”

The Validation Shift is all about having confidence in your ability to create the business you want... to call the shots and make solid decisions about how you're going to get where you want to go. This shift makes CEOs who can set goals and create results for themselves!

The Validation Shift

MINI LESSON #5

MORE ABOUT THE validation SHIFT

join prep work

keep reading this lesson

One of the most puzzling questions people sometimes throw at me is, "IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?!" Because here's what I know to be true: if you're asking that, it's 100% possible. It's impossible to give honest and serious consideration to anything that COULDN'T happen... but it's up to YOU to make it happen! Effective goal setting is a HUGE part of making progress!

So in the Validation Shift of Prep Work, we spend a lot of time talking about how you are, on one hand, the CEO of your business, but you're also working as an employee. When you're in Employee-Mode, your job is to create inputs (i.e. do work, get shit done). When you're in CEO-Mode, your job is to evaluate the outputs (i.e. determine "did my employee's work pay off? what do we need to change going forward?").

When you have a healthy relationship to how you're setting goals and evaluating results in your business (and not taking your results personally), you can make faster and more objective decisions about how you can grow.

The sub-3 minute clip above, straight from the Validation Shift, talks about the importance of separating your roles so you know how to adjust going forward and get the most out of "your employee" (ahem, YOU)...

See, if your business is personal (meaning, you care lots and lots about it and the thing you do), you're more likely to get yourself, your abilities, and your confidence tied up in how well the business does (and what you believe to be possible for it).

The more you acknowledge that your results are just a reflection of the quantity and effectiveness of your inputs, the less you see your results as a reflection of YOU (this = very important for mental health).

When you have a healthy relationship with goals and results, you can make faster, more objective decisions about how you can grow.

THE VALIDATION SHIFT

And it's not just that. When you have a clearer separation of you-as-a-person and the actions you took to try to make something happen, the better you can determine what needs to be tweaked, pivoted, scrapped entirely, or restrategized.

How do you do this?
1) You let your CEO set the vision for your business and determine what goals you're shooting for,
2) You get your employee-self to work on the tasks you believe will reach those goals,
3) You have your CEO evaluate the results of those ^^ actions, determine how effective they were, and repeat the cycle all over again.

When you make the Validation Shift, you know what kinds of goals to set first (if you've ever heard my spiel on Lead goals vs. Lag goals, we dive into that here!), what to do if your CEO- or employee-self is "underperforming" (seeing as how they're not really fire-able ;) ), and generally step up as the leader that any company needs in order to grow.

The Validation Shift is all about having confidence in your ability to create the business you want... to call the shots and make solid decisions about how you're going to get where you want to go.

As a sidebar, the Validation Shift is the one that Jill (remember her? the one who almost tripled her income from 2018 to 2019?) got mega results from!

I believe in you and your ability to build the business you want. If you've asked yourself, "is this even possible?!" Prep Work will show you that it absolutely is.

Sometimes people tell me they're on the fence because they think they only need 1 or 2 of the shifts. First, lovingly, I can assure you this is bologna.

If your business is below say, a solid 8 figures, I can guarantee that you will be making these shifts... over and over... and over. Sure, maybe one is more pressing right now, but these shifts WILL become urgent.

It's a matter of WHEN, not IF - because I know you're the kind of person who's going to keep growing... right into the next spot where you need one of these shifts to move forward.
